Belonging to the award-winning Scent First Series of Dianthus, ‘Sugar Plum’ dazzles with highly fragrant fully double flowers having wavy maroon-red petals with a soft-pink to white edge. The abundant clove-scented flowers sit atop thin stems that rise just above the low cushion of grassy, blue green leaves. You can expect a long bloom period from late spring through summer. A superb pot Dianthus that is also great for garden beds, this one is heat and drought tolerant, deer and rabbit resistant, and cold hardy to USDA Zone 5.

Landscape & Garden Uses

An upright grower to 10 inches tall and about a 12 inches wide, Sugar Plum Dianthus is ideal for use as an accent or grouping in smaller garden spaces or as a border along paths and walkways or surrounding patios or garden beds. Also excellent in container gardens. A fine addition to fragrance gardens, cut flower gardens, cottage gardens, sunny perennial gardens and red theme gardens.

Growing Preferences

Dianthus are very easy to grow in most any moist to somewhat dry well-drained soil of average to low fertility and full to mostly sun. Some shade is tolerated however flowering will be diminished in too much shade. We suggest at least 5 hours of direct sunlight for best flowering and overall performance. Plant with the top of the root ball even with ground level. Care and maintenance are minimal. Spent flowers can be deadheaded. Feed in spring with an organic plant food.
